Union Pacific work progressing on Harmony Road

FORT COLLINS – Union Pacific is in town to finish the signal upgrades required to complete the lane addition on Harmony Road.

The city added a lane to Harmony Road in both directions during the summer of 2012, but has been waiting for Union Pacific to complete signal upgrades necessary to meet safety regulations for the railroad crossing between Timberline Road and McMurry Avenue before opening the new lanes.

Union Pacific has been working on the crossing for the last several days, according to Tim Kemp, a civil engineer with the City of Fort Collins.

Union Pacific crews work on a schedule of eight days on and six days off, Kemp said, so the work will be stretched out over the next few weeks.

April 30 is the last day in their current eight-day stretch, and work will resume from May 7 to 14. Over the weekend of May 11 and 12, Harmony Road will experience some lane drops, but will not close completely, Kemp said.

The signal upgrades should be completed in late May, Kemp said, at which point all six lanes of Harmony Road will be opened for about one month until some surface work begins.

The entire project is expected to be complete at the end of June, if everything follows the current timeline.
