Simple Energy will offer its online and mobile energy-saving application platform to the project. The platform combines behavioral science research and social game mechanics that encourage energy efficiency. Participants in Simple Energy programs compare their real energy use with their friends and neighbors.
Other companies participating in the pilot program include IBM, General Electric Co., Verizon Enterprise Solutions Group and Navigant Consulting Inc.
The teams selected for the pilot by National Grid will provide customers with smart meters, advanced communications technologies, in-home energy management tools, devices for electric system automation, as well as customer outreach and education, project management, integration and evaluation.
National Grid’s pilot was approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities in August 2012. Since then, the company has been communicating with customers about the program and recently installed approximately 5,000 advanced meters to help test system communications and allow for equipment adjustments before full pilot launch, which is planned for early in 2014.
