High Park Fire sends cycling tour into Loveland

FORT COLLINS – The High Park Fire has forced the Denver Post Ride the Rockies cycling tour to revise its route for the sixth and final stage.

The route for Friday will begin in Estes Park and end at Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins as planned. The route, however, will change so that cyclists will now head into Loveland before riding to Fort Collins.

The fire has burned nearly 50,000 acres in the mountains west of Fort Collins. Authorities have closed some of the roads on the original route next to Horsetooth Reservoir.

The new route is as follows:

> U.S. 34 into Loveland to Wilson Avenue
> North on Wilson to 50th Street
> East on 50th Street to Taft Avenue
> North on Taft to Laurel Street in Fort Collins
> East on Laurel to Loomis Street
> North on Loomis to Mountain Avenue
> East on Mountain Avenue onto Lincoln Avenue to Odell Brewing Co.

About 2,400 riders will travel through the west side of Loveland from about 7 a.m. to noon. Riders will use bike lanes on Loveland roads and police will help with traffic control at major intersections.

Air quality may pose a problem, so cyclists will have the option of being shuttled into Fort Collins instead of cycling the last leg of the tour.

“The health and safety of our cyclists is our top priority,” Ride the Rockies Director Chandler Smith said. “Based on all available information, we believe this new route offers cyclists a strong sixth stage to the planned finished line, while minimizing potential health risks.”
