‘Smart people’ to present ideas at TEDx

BOULDER – Boulder is in for a mind-expanding evening of a different sort Saturday, Sept. 24, when 16 innovators, musicians and entrepreneurs are scheduled to present at TEDx Boulder.

The event is modeled on the popular talks given at TED conferences, which are held every year in Long Beach, California. The talks originally focused on technology, entertainment and design, but have expanded to include business, science and global issues.

TEDxBoulder is independently organized and run by local volunteers.

The presentations will focus on the ideas of time and change, although each presenter will give their own unique spin on the idea, said Ef Rodriguez, one of the event’s organizers.

“We did it last year for the first time, and we had an incredible response. There’s a groundswell of interest in getting people together to listen to smart people talk,” Rodriguez said.

Speakers will give three to 15 minute presentations and the lineup is eclectic.

Among the speakers are Kimbal Musk, cofounder of The Kitchen restaurant and an investor in tech companies such as PayPal and Tesla Motors, who will speak about reinventing restaurants. Ann Cooper, Boulder Valley School District’s director of food services and founder of Lunch Lessons LLC, will talk about improving nutrition for school kids.

The topics will not just be food related. Phil Plait, author of Discover Magazine’s “Bad Astronomy” blog, will speak about the potential consequences of a large asteroid striking the Earth.

“We took a lot of time to find people you wouldn’t expect to see paired together,” Rodriguez said.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Macky Auditorium, which is on the University of Colorado campus near the corner of 17th Street and University Avenue. Tickets cost $32 and $25 and are available online at www.tedxboulder.com.
