Thank You for the Rejection
I recently told a job searcher to send a thank you note to a hiring manager even though she was not offered a position. What? Are you crazy?
You might want to consider this idea if you can muster a sincere note of thanks. What do you have to be grateful for??? How about the opportunity to interview and learn about the organization? Recognize that “No” often just means “Not right now.” It rarely means, “Not in this lifetime.” Showing that you are a gracious loser may win hearts and ensure you get a call back for another interview when another opening comes up. And, the candidate they selected may end up backing out at the last minute. Leaving the window open makes it easier for the hiring manager to come crawling back to you in desperation. Don’t you just love that visual?
Writing a follow up thank you note is an advanced technique worth using when you come in second at a company of your choice. Swallow your pride and do something unpredictable. Act a little crazy. I dare you. And remember, every rejection brings you one step closer to a YES!
