Smiling Moose Deli to open Boulder store

BOULDER – Smiling Moose Deli will open a new location on June 2 in the southwest corner of the Twenty Ninth Street shopping center in Boulder.

The Boulder-based sandwich chain is growing rapidly, with 22 restaurants open or scheduled to open soon. There are 11 in Colorado, the company said.

“We were looking for an iconic location (in Boulder),´ said Larry Hill, the company’s director of development. “We’re a small brand, so we’re trying to compete with the big boys.”

The company said in March that sales have increased by about 25 percent every year for the past seven years. Annual sales were close to $10 million in 2010, said Kevin Sloane, company president. In addition, Smiling Moose saw “record-setting” catering sales in 2010 of about $2.5 million in annual sales, Sloane said.

Smiling Moose’s first Texas sandwich store set franchise records for best opening day sales. The store in Midland, Texas, opened Saturday, May 21. Other locations are slated to open soon in Bozeman, Montana; Evansville, Indiana; Gillette, Wyoming; and Dallas, Texas.
