The Search for…

There are two kinds of job seekers in the world: the reactive and the intentional.

Reactive jobseekers shoot off a few generic resumes to Craig’s List postings every day. About once a week they check in with a few staffing agencies to see what’s happening. These folks are half-heartedly going through job searching motions hoping a door will open.

Intentional jobseekers are targeting specific employers. They use spreadsheets to track their communications with various organizations and networking contacts. They customize their resumes and cover letters for each opening. They are creating opportunities and opening doors for themselves.

My guess is that both types of jobseekers have a similar need and desire to earn a living. Most people want and need to work. So, why the drastic difference in approaches?

It could be a lack of job search skills, waning self-confidence or poorly defined career goals. These things are key to navigating the job market.

On a deeper level, it could all come down to purpose. When we have no clue where we are headed, the journey is tentative and aimless. Somehow, once we find our purpose, the search itself becomes more purposeful and intentional.

Maybe you need to take a break from the reactionary and get visionary about your career. Stop the job search. Seek your higher purpose.
