My teenage son needs a job. The other day he said, “It would be so much easier if I were just a few years older. Then I would not be competing with every other teenager in this town for so few jobs.”
Ah, sweet child. It will never be easier than it is right this minute. First of all, Mom and Dad are paying the bills. You have a warm bed and food in your belly. On the other hand, college grads are wondering how they will pay back student loans with the money they make waiting tables at Macaroni Grill. Older workers are being passed over for younger, lest costly talent. No matter how old or young you are, the competition is steep and the market is tight.
It is important that job searchers understand that age is not the issue. The issue is that jobs are scarce. The grass is not greener. Don’t buy into this belief. It will not serve you well. Trust that you can stand out among the competition. You can shine and there is a job for you. Trust that.
