Rock Your Career

The other night I went to hear my friend perform in the lounge of a local restaurant. It was a new venue for her and she asked her fans to come and show their support. If she drew a crowd, perhaps the club owner would invite her back again.

There was a crowd all right. It was a full house. The only problem was that you could not hear the music over the din of happy hour and Friday night chatter.

Nevertheless, my friend stood proud, playing the guitar and singing her heart out. After about 10 songs she stopped to take a break. She gracefully mingled around the room, stopping at tables to say hello to people she knew before hitting the stage again.

My friend has been performing for many years. She is talented. She is being as true to her real self as anyone I know. And guess what? There are times when she gets weary of hustling gigs and playing in noisy bars.

Being real isn’t necessarily easy. Following your passion is often frustrating, demoralizing, and downright tough. But when you are truly in the flow of your life, you will encounter rocks in the stream. The rocks challenge you. They make you better.

Following our passion does not mean working in the absence of stress, fear, rejection, and hardship. Following one’s passion is a steadfast commitment to your work despite all those things.
