Let’s Do Some Good
The other day I called my cell phone service provider for assistance. Before I was connected to an agent, a message announced that, “A disabled veteran of the United States military will be handling this call.” Within mere seconds I felt really happy to be talking to Dan about my cell phone issue.
Sure the recorded message was a bit self-serving. But mostly it served a higher purpose. The company was raising awareness of a social ill in our society and they were showing their customers what they were doing to help solve the problem. It is incomprehensible that men and women who have served our country are now unemployed and living on the streets.
It also got me thinking about how it is not good enough for businesses to simply do no harm to the environment or to the communities of the world. It is in every organization’s best interest to actually do some good. Hire someone recently released from the prison system. Set your employees free to volunteer their time. Sponsor a cause. Give back. A company will flourish when it strives for something even bigger than making a self-serving profit.
