State unemployment rate up

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Colorado saw an increase in its unemployment rate for February, according to recent data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For February, the state reported a 4.4 percent unemployment rate — up from 4.2 in January and 4 percent in December. The state saw a year-over-year increase of more than half a percentage point; the rate in February 2007 was 3.8 percent. The year-over-year change is the difference between 102,900 unemployed workers last year compared to 120,800 unemployed this year.

Nationwide, 20 states reported month-over-month unemployment rate decreases, 19 reported increases and 11 saw no change. Michigan reported the highest unemployment rate at 7.2 percent followed by Alaska at 6.6 percent. The lowest unemployment rates in February were in South Dakota at 2.6 percent and Wyoming at 2.7 percent.
