Athletes master swimming in early morning classes
The smell of chlorine permeates the early morning air as they train. They do laps and work on their technique in a dimly lit pool well before the sun rises over the Boulder Valley.
These athletes are master swimmers, not because of their ability, but because they swim with a group sanctioned by United States Masters Swimming, a national organization that provides organized workouts, competitions, clinics and workshops for adults aged 18 and older.
Founded in 1970, the nonprofit has 500 clubs throughout the U.S., including five groups that meet in the city of Boulder alone.
