Carrot grower cuts major deal

GREELEY – Hungenberg Produce Co., an 85-year-old vegetable farming and shipping business in Lucerne, has purchased the former Monson Brothers Co. packaging operation in a $2.25 million deal.

The purchase includes the 100,000-square-foot warehouse and cold storage facility at 31466 Weld County Road 39 1/2, and 43 surrounding acres.

Hungenberg, which specializes in carrots and cabbage, took advantage of the Monson Brothers decision earlier this year to get out of the vegetable business. Monson Brothers, a competitor for Hungenberg in the carrot market, had operated in Weld County approximately 35 years. The company auctioned off some of its equipment in February.
