Steele’s grocery-store chain closings had ripple effects
Dozens of businesses did business with Steele’s Markets Inc. and all were put on notice when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2001. But until the events of Sept. 11 and later, Steele’s officials believed they would be able to reorganize and stay open.
Now, those businesses are feeling the ripple effect of Steele’s final closure in November. Not many have closed, but some are scrambling to find new locations, new customers and taking part in Steele’s bankruptcy proceedings.
