Arthur Andersen?s tech, media practices open in Mountain View

BROOMFIELD ? Global-consulting and accounting firm Arthur Andersen has opened an office in the Mountain View Corporate Center on Interlocken Loop in Broomfield.

The office will house the firm’s technology, media and communications practice, which provides tax and consulting services to Boulder County and Colorado technology and communications companies.

Some of the firm’s clients include Level 3 Communications, Genomica, Athene Software, Requisite Technology and Cielo Communications. Arthur Andersen has more than 600 employees in Colorado.Volunteer Connection names director

BOULDER ? The Volunteer Connection of Boulder has named Laura F. Kinder as its new executive director.

Kinder brings more than 20 years of experience in the medical and non-profit sectors to her new position.

The Volunteer Connection, Colorado’s first volunteer clearinghouse, was established in 1969. The organization promotes volunteerism and volunteer opportunities, matching volunteers with organizations that need them. The Volunteer Connection also provides technical assistance and training in volunteer management and develops corporate volunteer programs.Velvet Slipper steps out

BOULDER ? The Velvet Slipper, a designer women’s shoe store, is closing its Boulder location at 1901 Broadway, near the Pearl Street Mall, on April 1. The store will reopen in Houston.

BOULDER — NetLibrary, a Boulder-based company that makes and distributes electronic books, cut 20 jobs March 1 because of market conditions. Jobs were cut in all areas of the company, except upper management, a company spokesperson said.

The company employs about 400 workers.

In January, NetLibrary let go 12 employees, including its chief financial officer. In December 2000, it pulled its $82.2 million initial public offering, citing poor market conditions. Ionics opens Boulder office

BOULDER ? Ionics Inc. (NYSE: ION), a Watertown, Mass.-based water purification company, has moved its instrument business to Boulder.

Ionics is a global separations technology company that produces equipment and provides services for the purification, disinfection, concentration, treatment and analysis of water, wastewater and ultrapure water. For the past 50 years, Ionics has built desalination plants for the treatment of water around the world. The company produces the purified water brand Aqua Cool.

Revenues for the fourth quarter were $146.8 million, compared to revenues of $99.6 for the same quarter in 1999. Net income was approximately $1.6 million, compared to $4.2 million in 1999. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $10.8 million.Digital Creators dissolved; 50 laid off

BOULDER ? TeleTech Holdings Inc., a Denver-based provider of electronic customer-care solutions and parent to Digital Creators of Boulder, is dissolving the company and laying off about 50 employees here as part of a restructuring plan.

Performance that was not up to par with standards set by the parent company led to the layoffs. Digital Creators’ offerings will be incorporated into TeleTech. About 15 of those laid off have been offered positions with TeleTech. Prior to the layoffs, Digital Creators employed 80 people at its Boulder offices.

Digital Creators was founded in 1994 and bought by TeleTech in 1998. TeleTech (Nasdaq: TTEC) employs more than 25,000 people worldwide. YottaYotta acquires QLogic office

BOULDER ? Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based QLogic Corp. has sold one of its technologies to Seattle-based YottaYotta, the Yottabyte Net Storage Co. In the deal, YottaYotta assumes QLogic’s development facility in Boulder.

YottaYotta purchased for an undisclosed amount QLogic’s AdaptiveRAID technology, used in network storage, in which both companies participate. QLogic had purchased the AdapativeRAID technology for $7.5 million in cash in January 2000 from Borg Adaptive Technologies, Inc. At that time, QLogic assumed a facility lease on a building in Boulder that would become its design center.

That same center now belongs to YottaYotta and the integration of the Boulder employees began Feb. 26.

“The AdaptiveRAID technology is a great addition to our already strong intellectual property portfolio and the acquisition from QLogic also provides YottaYotta a foothold for building a Colorado-based development center to work in concert with out Edmonton R&D facility,´ said Steve Mattioli, president and chief executive officer of YottaYotta, in a statement. “YottaYotta plans to develop a significant presence in Boulder and continue our aggressive growth plans.”

QLogic will retain a license to use the AdaptiveRAID technology in its products.
