News: National Tech University launches $12 appeal

FORT COLLINS – National Technological University has launched a $12 million, four-year fund-raising campaign through a new nonprofit arm, theNational Technological University Foundation. “We’ve never had a major gift campaign, and we’re about to launch one,´ said Lionel Baldwin, NTU president. While the university itself is also nonprofit, creation of a foundation should give assurance to potential donors that funds raised will be accounted forproperly and used for their stated purpose, Baldwin said. NTU, headquartered in the Centre for Advanced Technology at Colorado State University, is a private institution that uses telecommunications tobring advanced-degree programs to engineers, scientists and technical managers. The university, which has graduated about 1,000, serves 160
corporate sponsors throughout North America. About 1,300 individuals have signed up for approximately 4,600 courses. NTU will use the $12 million for a variety of purposes, including: Providing access to NTU courses by satellite-direct TV to the home, using one-meter antennas, thereby enabling alumni and students to
continue their learning.
Testing the cost-effectiveness of instruction delivered by public and private fiber-optic networks using new technologies.
Accelerating collaborative learning with multimedia groupware via the Internet to facilitate student-to-student and student-to-instructor
interaction.
Creating better measures of educational accomplishment that strengthen the certification of learning as it relates to specific job skills.
Re-engineering job-site delivery systems to empower learners and reduce dependence on administrative support.
Enlarging NTU’s headquarters building to accommodate more staff, electronic equipment and programs for more students. Baldwin said likely donors would include corporate sponsors of NTU programs, as well as philanthropic organizations that have an interest in
engineering and technological education.
