Timberline extension continues to divide

FORT COLLINS – Developers and landowners are impatiently awaiting a resolution of the Timberline Road dispute.

The newly widened Timberline Road now ends at Prospect Road. Traffic continuing north must then funnel through the busy intersection of Riverside and Lemay avenues or veer east on Prospect Road to Summit View Drive. An extension would continue north from Prospect Road, zigzag east across ponds and the Cache La Poudre River, and connect with East Mulberry Street west of the Summit View Drive intersection.

Manageable now, traffic may bottleneck badly if or when growth in the northeastern part of Fort Collins increases.

The influx of population and business is stretching Fort Collins rapidly toward the east, west and south edges of its Urban Growth Area.

“If you look back, one of the goals has always been more growth toward the north, where there’s infrastructure,´ said Tom Nix, sales associate with Realty World Rhodes Ltd.

To facilitate that growth, many believe the Timberline Road extension is essential.

“Timberline is incredibly important,´ said Craig Harrison, president of Harrison Resource Corp. It would, he says, take traffic pressure off Lemay and College avenues. But city officials have been moving cautiously.

“The current city council has basically been dragging its feet,´ said Ronn Frank of The Group.

“City Council doesn’t have anything to do with it,” City Council member Gina Jannett countered.

City staff has convened round-table discussions on the project. An engineering firm also has been hired to design possible routes through the wetlands area, though there has not yet been a study of the environmental impact of putting a major arterial through that area, Jannett said.

Construction of the extension is planned for the 1995-97 fiscal year, “and we’re not behind schedule yet,” Jannett said.
