Fort Collins chamber, sheriff partner on cyber-crime workshop

FORT COLLINS — The Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce and Larimer County Sheriff’s Office will partner on a cyber security summit, Sept. 25, at The Ranch Events Complex, First National Bank, North Exhibition Hall in Loveland. The vendor hall will open at 8 a.m., and the program is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event was established to create a greater awareness of cyber threats and offer resources to protect information and assets. The event will be of interest to businesses, law enforcement and the public at large. The full agenda can be found here.

Daniel Eliot with the National Cyber Security Alliance will be the keynote speaker. He will speak to small-business threats, issues and resources. Other presenters include: Rodney Gullatte Jr., Small Business Development Center, certified IT professional and ethical hacker; Chris Calarco, FBI special agent; and Ryan Bergsieker, former federal cybercrimes prosecutor.

“Cyber threats and attacks have become very common, and small businesses are a likely target,” David May, chamber president and CEO, said in a press release. He said 43 percent of cyber attacks target small business. “It is at a critical time that we teamed up with the Sheriff’s Office to host this event. Business of all sizes and individuals should be mindful and dedicate time to be proactive with cyber security.”

We recognize that cyber crime represents one of the most significant threats to intellectual property and to the finances of businesses today,” Sheriff Justin Smith said. “Cyber criminals target businesses of all sizes and launch their attacks from around the globe. These factors make cyber crime extremely difficult to solve and prosecute. The best defense to cyber crime losses is a strong offense.”

Event tickets are $40 for chamber members, $50 for nonmembers and special pricing for law enforcement. Tickets can be purchased here
