Flatirons Solutions acquires Niwot-based TechPubs

BOULDER — Flatirons Solutions, which employs 70 people in Boulder, has acquired Niwot-based competitor TechPubs Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 2008, TechPubs makes software to help airlines store, share, distribute and update technical documentation such as flight manuals for pilots, flight attendants and maintenance crews, as well as helping to make sure the documentation maintains regulatory compliance.

Pat Dawson, vice president of solutions marketing for Flatirons Solutions, in an interview on Tuesday called the two companies’ products complementary to each other. Flatirons Solutions, which is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., makes similar software that is geared more toward maintenance crews, while TechPubs’ products were geared more toward the flight operations side.

“By combining the two, we can give airlines a sort of one-stop shop,” Dawson said.

Flatirons Solutions Corp. was started in Colorado in 2001. It was acquired by Irvine-based InfoTrust in 2013, with the combined company taking on the Flatirons Solutions Inc. name. Flatirons Solutions employs about 500 people globally. In addition to the aviation products, the firm uses its technology to help companies in a wide variety of industries, including financial services and health care, to maintain their data and keep it searchable and compliant with industry regulations.

Dawson said Flatirons Solutions will integrate TechPubs’ offerings into its own Corena Suite of products. TechPubs’ local operations will be moved into Flatirons Solutions’ east Boulder office, while the two companies’ operations in Shanghai will also be combined.

Dawson said TechPubs CEO David Williams has remained onboard with Flatirons Solutions, but declined to say how many employees TechPubs had at the time of the merger or how many of those would be staying with the company. At the time of a funding round last year aimed at helping grow sales and marketing, Williams told BizWest that TechPubs employed 40 people, including five locally at its headquarters.
