Get Green harnesses nitrogen, fertilizes naturally

LOUISVILLE – The company that brought an innovative and environmentally friendly solution to dog spots in the yard is introducing a new product that harnesses the Earth’s nitrogen to fertilize grass.

Get Green by Global Environmental Technologies Microsolutions, based in Louisville, is the first product of its kind to harvest the Earth’s free nitrogen from the air and convert it to usable nitrogen for the grass, said company co-founder Justin Eisenach.

“Nitrogen is the No. 1 nutrient a grass needs, and the air we breathe is 79 percent nitrogen,” he said.
Plants like clover, alfalfa hay and legumes are able to harvest the nitrogen from the air naturally. GET Microsolutions was able to identify the bacteria used by those plants and include it in its formulation.

Get Green allows an unlimited amount of nitrogen to be brought to the grass with no runoff and no lasting odor. The nitrogen helps to increase the root mass so the grass can better use the nutrients in the soil. GET Microsolutions is planning to launch Get Green in either December or January, Eisenach said. The product will retail for less than $20 a bottle and will cover 10,000 square feet.

“Homeowners can use a natural and organic solution to harvest the Earth’s free nitrogen, and they don’t have to spend a lot of money,” Eisenach said. “I believe some day we can change the way people care for and fertilize their lawn.”

Get Green can work in conjunction with GET Microsolutions’ other new product, Get Growing. Get Growing is designed to supplement the soil’s microbial activity to improve decomposition of organic matter and return the nutrients to a form the lawn can utilize. By applying Get Growing after leaving grass clippings on the ground, it assists in their decomposition, recycles soil nutrients, increases microbial activity in soil thereby releasing soil nutrients and reduces soil compaction.

“If you leave your grass clippings on, Get Green and Get Growing should solve a majority of the fertilizer needs for a majority of homeowners,” Eisenach said.

All of the products are natural and organic. The homeowner can apply them, let them dry, and then kids and pets can walk and play on the lawn without worry.

Eisenach and his business partner, Scott Dyer, didn’t start out with a goal to be green. They started out to fix a problem and happened to come up with a green solution. Eisenach is happy things turned out that way. “The last thing you want to do is apply harsh chemicals,” he said. “The key is to make the turf ecosystem healthy.”

Eisenach and Dyer discovered a market for Get Growing and Get Green after users of their Guard Dog product started applying it on their yards even when they didn’t have dog spots because it made their grass look healthy.
Doug Johnson was one of those users. He used Guard Dog on the front yard and said it looked great, but didn’t use it on the backyard, which had started to look haggard because of the wear and tear from his three large dogs. Eisenach suggested Johnson use Guard Dog on his backyard.

“The backyard now looks as good as the front,” he said. “I spray it on the whole lawn. The bottom line is it works”

“We realized we could appeal to every lawn owner in America,” Eisenach said.

They launched Get Growing at the Garden Wise show on Oct. 11 and are excited for the launch of Get Green.

“It has the ability to change how Americans care for their yards,” Eisenach said.

Guard Dog, Get Growing and Get Green are applied by attaching the bottle to the hose and spraying the lawn. One bottle of Get Growing is equivalent to a 50-pound bag of natural and organic fertilizer. Eisenach recommends applying the product every few months in spring, summer and fall.

GET Microsolutions already has achieved considerable success with its Guard Dog product. The product is in 120 stores in Colorado and 100 stores outside of the state. Eisenach said the company is continuing to expand the Guard Dog brand to individual lawn and garden stores. Starting in November, Guard Dog will be available on Amazon.com, and in the spring it will be available on the Home Shopping Network. Eisenach is pleased with the product’s success.

On March 1, Guard Dog was introduced to 6.5 million households and now they have reached more than 100 million. The company offers a money-back guarantee on Guard Dog and only .03 percent of its customers return the product.

The company’s greatest challenge so far has been advertising and getting the word out. GET Microsolutions has done a little radio advertising so far and plans to do some television advertising in the future.

Eisenach could not supply specific revenue numbers, but more than 10,000 units of Guard Dog have been sold as of March 1. The units have a retail value of $25. According to Eisenach, GET Microsolutions is profitable, but it sinks all the profits back into the company.

“We are continuing to focus on expanding the market,” Eisenach said. “I see a real opportunity for a national natural and organic lawn-care company. We hope to work with a larger company that has a need to have a national brand organic lawn-care product.”

GET Microsolutions is looking for outside investors to generate capital to expand and increase sales and marketing.
