Cyclists — stay away from Berthoud!

Interesting story in The Coloradoan today.

A motorist allegedly pulled his vehicle in front of three cyclists and started yelling at them. When the cyclists tried to go around the vehicle, the driver started waving an aluminum baseball bat them. One of the cyclists used his Trek Madone to defend himself and the motorist then struck the bike several times on the ground, which destroyed the carbon fiber frame.

Witnesses claim the motorist said he was tired of old guys from Boulder hogging the road.

So, this raises a rather interesting question: how does a cyclist defend himself during confrontations? Not having recessed shoe cleats like SPD would put a rider at a severe footing disadvantage, too. Bike-pump billy club? Gu gel oil slick?
