Tell Me A Story

First of all, I am a big fan of chronological resumes. You can take your functional resume and make it into an origami swan. Add a string and dangle it from your monitor. I don’t want to see it.

What I want to see is a resume that tells me what you have been doing lately. The other thing I want to see is the progression of your career. How did you come to do the work you have been doing and what makes you qualified for my opening? After I carefully scan your most recent work history, I head to the bottom of your resume to get an idea of your entire career journey. It should make sense whether I read from top to bottom or bottom to top.

Here is the deal. Your resume should tell me where you have been, where you are now, and where you want to go next. Add some sparkle. Make it your own.  And if you want a happy (and swift) ending to your job search, let your resume tell a compelling story with a clear and chronological beginning, middle and end.
