If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would that be?
Why you do something is as important as what and how you do something. I grew up focused on perfectionism but it left me a bit lost when looking for my first job out of college and just really lacking interest around any prospects. It was difficult to grasp trading such precious life energy in exchange for something that wasn’t fulfilling to me, no matter the paycheck. After a few very boring, unfulfilling years, I finally took the leap of faith on myself to start what’s been over ten years of being an entrepreneur.
Being an entrepreneur is in direct constrast to the control of perfectionism but it’s opened up the door to lead a life filled with passion and purpose.
Who do you count as your greatest mentor(s) that have helped you succeed in your personal and professional life?
I don’t think I have a particular “greatest mentor” but I draw inspiration daily from people who lead passion-filled lives for things greater than themselves and random acts of generosity towards others. I love that it provides an opportunity to be surrounded by inspiration everywhere always in a world that can also feel harsh and dark. I believe the small things are actually the big things.
In the cycling world, I see people who lead regular group rides geared for slower riders, people who stop to help people with flats, and random strangers who have given me rides in their vehicles in hail storms as some kind examples. We always remember the outliers, especially the negative, but what if we spent more time focused on all the incredible people in the world and build on that energy and leadership? It’s the world I’m interested in living in.
Where do you see yourself and what will you be doing with your life after 40?
I’ve excepted the ebb and flow of entrepreneurial life and our modern day. Generally, I plan for the best but also prepare for the worst. I’d like to think that Bike Sports ventures will still be here, influential, and supporting the region, but who can truly say what the future holds?
