Fun Fly to celebrate model flight

LONGMONT — Fun Fly, the Longmont event celebrating National Model Aviation Day, will bring together aviation enthusiasts and members of a local Academy of Model Aeronautics club, the Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers, to fly model aircraft.

Proceeds from Fun Fly will support Mountain States Children’s Home, a Longmont-based children’s home for children who have experienced emotional trauma and behavioral issues resulting from abuse, neglect and abandonment.

“We felt we needed to start giving back to the community that gives us so much, including the land we fly on. We believe it’s important to partner with our local communities and want city officials to realize the important role all flying clubs play in their communities. Our Fun Fly will be a benefit for our club, the Mountain State Children’s Home and the AMA,” Mark Faivre, president of Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers, said in a written statement.

AMA clubs across the country will celebrate National Model Aviation Day with free events that are open to the public. These events benefit local charities and highlight the importance of model aviation. Flying model aircraft is a tool to encourage young people to explore careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

Fun Fly will be 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at 26 County Road, Longmont.
