Former Nugget sues cannabis entrepreneurs

DENVER — A former Denver Nuggets point guard is suing two marijuana entrepreneurs, claiming they swindled him after he put $500,000 into their business.

Ty Lawson filed a complaint in Denver County Court on July 13, according to BusinessDen, The claim says that Jose Maldonado and Emanuel A. Bernal did not share profits of a marijuana grow house Lawson helped purchase.

Lawson says he is entitled to get his initial investment back, plus a 45 percent share in a cannabis cultivation facility at 2323 S. Lipan St. But Maldonado and Bernal say that Lawson’s 45 percent cut only applies to a 7,000 square-foot corner of the 50,000 square-foot warehouse.

Lawson started playing with the Nuggets in 2009. When he partnered with Maldonado and Bernal in 2013, he had signed a $48 million, four-year extension. However, that was cut short in 2015 when he was traded to Houston following a disappointing season and two DUIs. Today he plays with the Sacramento Kings.
