Comcast to offer ultra high-speed residential Internet in Colorado

FORT COLLINS — Comcast is launching residential Internet service with speeds up to 1 gigabit-per-second throughout Colorado.

The announcement comes after the company launched a new platform Xfinity xFi, a digital dashboard for customers to set up their home Wi-Fi network.

“We want to ensure residents throughout Colorado have the ability to connect with each other and their communities and share information and entertainment in the most convenient way possible,” Rich Jennings, Comcast’s senior vice president of the Mountain West Region, said in a prepared statement. “Our 1-gig service will provide the fastest speed to the most homes – over existing wiring that most people already have in their homes.”

How dispatchable resources enable the clean energy transition

Platte River must prepare for the retirement of 431 megawatts (MW) of dispatchable, coal-fired generation by the end of the decade and address more frequent extreme weather events that can bring dark calms (periods when there is no sun or wind).

But the news comes in the midst of several Colorado cities and counties voting to offer municipal broadband, exempting them from state limitations on telecommunications services.

Fort Collins, for example, is seeking proposals for third-party providers, as well as considering a retail model where the city itself builds and operates a broadband network.

Other cities like Boulder, Loveland, Lafayette, Golden, Estes Park, Grand Junction and Centennial have voted in favor of municipal broadband and are exploring their options. Longmont has launched its own service, NextLight.

Although cities are considering offering their own broadband service, there are still those that are in favor of Comcast’s ultra-high speed offering.
“Access to reliable, fast internet connection is a critical step in economic development in Larimer County,” Lew Gaiter III, Larimer District 1 County Commissioner, said in a prepared statement. “We are excited to see Comcast increasing their capacity to start providing 1 gigabit service in their existing network. This increased capacity will be of significant benefit to businesses and citizens in Larimer County.”

Comcast’s 1-gigabit service in Colorado will be $159.95 per month, without a contract. The company said it is also testing a $109.99 promotional price in select markets across the state.
