Longmont sales-, use-tax revenue up 11%

LONGMONT – The city of Longmont’s sales- and use-tax collections increased 11.4 percent in September, compared with the same period a year ago, according to the city finance department’s latest report.

Longmont collected $4,136,688 in September, compared with $3,714,194 collected in September 2011. The collection in September represents sales made in August.

The sales-tax component of collections increased by 5.6 percent from the same month the year before, and the use-tax component increased by 40.4 percent.

Total sales- and use-tax collections for the year to date increased 3.9 percent compared with the same period in 2011, according to the report.

Automotive, food and general categories gained year-to-date compared with the same period in 2011. Automotive sales-tax revenue was up 10.3 percent; food sales tax was up 7.2 percent and general sales tax was up 2.2 percent. Utilities sales-tax revenue decreased 5.2 percent for the year to date, compared with the same period in 2011.

Lumber, manufacturing and vehicle categories all showed increases in use-tax revenues as well for the year to date. Use-tax revenue was up 64.4 percent for lumber, 35.9 percent for manufacturing and 9 percent for vehicles, compared with the same period in 2011.

In total, sales- and use-tax revenue collected in September, along with previous tax revenue collected in 2012, represents 64.6 percent of the cumulative 2012 Longmont city budget, according to the finance department’s latest tax report.

City lodging-tax revenue increased 7 percent month over month, with $32,442 in lodging-tax revenue collected from hotels in September for the month of August, compared with $30,325 in August 2011.
