Goodwill to open store in Longmont

LONGMONT – Goodwill Industries of Denver will open a store early this spring at the corner of Main Street and 17th Avenue in Longmont in a space previously occupied by Albertsons and later SmartCo Foods grocery stores.

Apparel, shoes and household goods donated to Goodwill stores will fill the 27,275-square-foot space at 1750 North Main St. in the Westview Plaza, said Jeni Anderson, a Goodwill spokeswoman. The store is expected to create about 30 new jobs, and is expected to become self-sustaining with donations from Longmont residents relatively quickly, Anderson said.

No specific date has been set for the store opening, Anderson said. The location also will feature an outdoor drop-off/donation area. Proceeds from sales go to community programs that help at-risk youth, people with disabilities and struggling adults.

How dispatchable resources enable the clean energy transition

Platte River must prepare for the retirement of 431 megawatts (MW) of dispatchable, coal-fired generation by the end of the decade and address more frequent extreme weather events that can bring dark calms (periods when there is no sun or wind).

“Boulder County is a really good fit for us,” Anderson said. “We look for communities where the quality of donations and variety of donations will be such that we can create a self-sufficient store.”

Goodwill Industries opened individual stores in Boulder and in Lafayette in the last year or so, Anderson said. Both of those stores are “doing well” for the nonprofit group, Anderson said, declining to give specific numbers.

Goodwill Industries of Denver had a budget of about $50 million in 2010 and operated 24 stores. In addition to the Longmont store, Goodwill Industries also plans to open a store in the Stapleton neighborhood of Denver in the spring.
