Why We Hate HR

I should have known that working in HR would drive me crazy. I like being liked. Turns out, no one likes HR. Here’s Why…

Guilt-Ridden PTO
Why does HR have to act as if sick pay is coming out of their very own pockets? How annoying! The same goes for short-term disability. Lose the guilt. Wouldn’t it be nice if HR could execute PTO and other time off policies with grace?

Paranoid Bereavement Practices
You want a death certificate so I can take my measly three days of bereavement leave? Forget it. I would rather take unpaid leave than bother my grieving relatives for Uncle Joe’s death certificate. Oh, uncles don’t count? This is nuts.

Inhumane Lay-Offs
There is no excuse for giving shocked employees boxes to collect their things before escorting them from the building like criminals.

Stupid interview questions
Who cares what kind of tree I would be if I were a tree? I am not a tree!

No response to applicants
Auto responders are just not that hard to set up. And while we are on the subject, how about making your auto-response friendly and humane?

Poor Follow Up
All candidates who have taken the time to go through a phone screen or face-to-face interview should be followed up with by phone NOT on email or with a postcard. This is the least HR can do.

Dog and Pony Recruiting
This is where the HR person starts interviewing BEFORE there is actually a budget to fill the position. Don’t waste a candidate’s time with an opportunity that isn’t even real!

Willy Nilly Policies
Employees are weary of flavor of the week, book of the month leadership practices. Minute by minute policy changes and inequitable execution are a major turn-off.

Pitiful Performance Evaluation Processes
Most plans leave employees feeling devalued and de-motivated. Something has to change!

Oh the list could go on and on! While HR and upper management are busy playing the blame game over issues such as these, good employees and talented candidates are plotting their escape. When are organizations going to realize that their people are their biggest asset? More importantly, when will they act accordingly?
