Making Meaningful Connections
Networking is still considered by many people to be a dreaded chore rather than a lovely opportunity. It is our true nature to connect with others so I am not sure why so many of us find it so challenging. Try the following to make connecting more meaningful:
- Look people in the eyes. You will be awed by the humanity that comes shining back at you.
- Shake hands in a way that says, “I am touched by you.”
- Smile. Nod. Sparkle. Twinkle. Laugh out loud.
- Don’t push your values and opinions.
- But do exude your passions.
- Seek common ground. What interests do you share?
- Exchange stories about things that you are doing that excite you.
- Share your fears, admit a failure, and be willing to be vulnerable.
- Listen. Just listen.
- Follow up. I recently met a lady at a BBQ and the next day she emailed me some fantastic yoga pod casts and a video on how to stain concrete. She heard my needs and sent support. Woot!
- Be yourself. You are remarkable just as you are. Give others the same grace.
