Making Meaningful Connections

Networking is still considered by many people to be a dreaded chore rather than a lovely opportunity. It is our true nature to connect with others so I am not sure why so many of us find it so challenging. Try the following to make connecting more meaningful:

  • Look people in the eyes. You will be awed by the humanity that comes shining back at you.
  • Shake hands in a way that says, “I am touched by you.”
  • Smile. Nod. Sparkle. Twinkle. Laugh out loud.
  • Don’t push your values and opinions.
  • But do exude your passions.
  • Seek common ground. What interests do you share?
  • Exchange stories about things that you are doing that excite you.
  • Share your fears, admit a failure, and be willing to be vulnerable.
  • Listen. Just listen.
  • Follow up. I recently met a lady at a BBQ and the next day she emailed me some fantastic yoga pod casts and a video on how to stain concrete. She heard my needs and sent support. Woot!

Now get off this computer and go make a face-to-face connection with someone. You can do it!
