Fire destroys CSU equine reproductive lab

FORT COLLINS – An early morning fire July 26 destroyed the Colorado State University Equine Reproductive Laboratory, causing at least $9 million to $12 million in damages.

Patrick Love, Poudre Fire Authority spokesman, said two ladder trucks responded to a fire call at about 1 a.m. and found flames reaching about 20 feet above the facility on CSU’s Foothills campus at 3013 Rampart Road.

Love said firefighters, students and faculty helped evacuate horses in a nearby building and no people or animals were injured.

Love said the laboratory’s roof collapsed and the building is likely to be considered a total loss. Love said the $9 million to $12 million was an initial estimate and probably did not include the cost of replacing lost equipment in the facility.

Love said PFA investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
