Making Connections
Networking is likely THE most talked about and valuable job search skill. So often, it’s who you know, not what you know that lands you a in a new position. Most job searchers bristle when they hear the word “networking.” The idea that you must network in order to find work can paralyze the average introvert. Extroverts don’t dread networking quite so much but that does not necessarily mean that they know how to effectively connect with others.
Networking is an art. Done well, it opens doors. Done poorly, it can slam them shut.
I consider networking, in its highest form, to be an act of humanity in action. It is people helping people. It is an act of faith. It is a show of kindness, abundance, and respect.

So, here are some golden rules of artful networking:
- Listen twice as much as you speak.
- Look people in the eyes and you will not mistake the divinity within.
- Be open to learning from all people, not only those who are “just like you.”
- Don’t show up with an empty cup hoping to be filled up by others; give generously and never keep score.
No one ever accomplished anything completely on his or her own. We need each other.
