Brazilian beef products barred by USDA

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– Beef products from JBS S.A.’s Lins, Brazil, plant have been recalled
and barred from further entry into the United States.

On May 14,
the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service
announced that 87,000 pounds of beef product – in the form of 12-ounce
cans of Libby’s Corned Beef and 35-pound boxes of Seasoned Cooked Beef –
distributed through the Sampco Inc. facility in Chicago were being
recalled.

The recall was initiated following a routine sampling.
Since March 15, samples of cooked beef products from the Lins site
(identified as SIF 337) returned 12 instances of a level of Ivermectin
exceeding the tolerance level established by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration. Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medication, and the
health risk is classified as low.

The lots inspected were refused
entry into the U.S.; however, associated products with similar source
materials that entered separately are the subject of the recall.

JBS,
parent company to Greeley-based JBA USA, released a statement on May
20, stating that the company is promoting a recall of the products and
will analyze them to clarify any problem. JBS added that it believes the
financial impact will be immaterial. The company will be able to shift
other plants to U.S. export operations while Lins continues to serve
other markets.
