CSU receives specialty crop grants

DENVER – Sixteen grants totaling more than $625,000 have been awarded to a variety of agricultural-related recipients through the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crops Program.

Colorado State University received a $94,750 grant to support small acreage, socially disadvantaged and beginning specialty crop producers. The grant will be used to hire a specialty crops coordinator and for producer grants for on-farm research and demonstration marketing projects.

CSU also received an unspecified amount of funding to develop an online training program for good agricultural practices and good handling practices for fruit and vegetable growers.

Others receiving grants included the Colorado Certified Potato Growers Association, Colorado Chef’s Association, Colorado Farmers Market Association, Colorado Onion Association, Mountain Valley Canning and Rocky Mountain Sod Growers Association.

“The increase in funding has provided a tremendous opportunity for Colorado’s agricultural community to tackle projects not previously possible,´ said Tom Lipetzky, Colorado Department of Agriculture’s markets director.
