Joe Gordon could not be counted among the super rich. But he and his wife and their two youngsters – 9 and 11 – with a house mortgage and two cars consider themselves a member of America’s “emerging affluent.”

Joe and his working wife take home a combined salary of $86,000 yearly putting him smack dab in the upper-middle class. Joe’s family, like many other households across the nation with middle-class income but major expenses, is still shrewdly investing for its future years.
