New association formed for state’s photonics industry

DENVER — The Colorado Photonics Industry Association or CPIA, is a new statewide organization that was formed to promote and strengthen the photonics industry. This organization will bring together professionals in industry, education and the government, working in research, development and manufacturing.

According to Leo Bannon, president of CPIA and president of Balzers Thin Films in Golden, “The CPIA will allow industry professionals to promote our research and achievements worldwide. The collaboration and education will benefit us all tremendously.”

Additional appointments include: Brian Hooker, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, as secretary; and Heather Tooker, vice president of marketing at Meadowlark Optics in Frederick, as treasurer.

Other CPIA directives include: representing state’s industry nationally and internationally; development of educational funding to meet future staffing needs; providing meetings with guest speakers, reduced exhibition fees at conferences, and a scholarship program; and maintaining a database of company, university and national laboratory capabilities.
