17th Annual Chocolate Lovers’ Fling

BOULDER — Chocolate lovers once again will gather for an entire evening of sampling delicious chocolate cookies, cakes, candy and other desserts from the area’s best bakeries, restaurants and caterers at the 17th annual Chocolate Lovers’ Fling.

This delightful evening on Friday, Feb. 6, also includes contests for “Best Chocolate Recipe” and “Sheer Chocolate Artistry.”

Proceeds benefit the Boulder County Safehouse for Women and their Children. The shelter houses battered individuals and their children and extends educational and counseling services on domestic violence to the Boulder and tri-cities communities.

Other festivities include a silent auction of hundreds of items donated by restaurants, travel agencies, artists, clothing stores and other members of the Boulder community. Decorated gift baskets, made by guild members, are included in the auction.

The Chocolate Lovers’ Fling is from 7 to 10 p.m., in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University of Colorado Memorial Center.

Tickets, which are $20 in advance, $25 at the door ($15 tax deductible) are available at the Brewing Market, Village location; Ideal Market; Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory; Buchanan’s Coffee Pub; and Lafayette State Bank in Lafayette.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The Boulder County Safehouse Support Guild, which organizes the Chocolate Lovers’ Fling, originally was formed in the spring of 1981 with an all-day luncheon/lecture benefit for the Boulder County Safehouse.

In 1983, the group struck upon the idea for a fresh, new event. Despite only six weeks of planning, the first Chocolate Lover’s Fling was a great success.

As the event became better known and attendance increased, it soon became an annual February event.

By 1989, a contest and auction of special desserts had been added to the event, again increasing participation. In 1990 the Fling moved to the Elk’s Club but eventually even that space was not big enough.

So in 1991, the Fling was held at the Glen Miller Ballroom in the UMC on CU’s campus. For the 9th annual event, a silent auction was added and the donation to the Safehouse again climbed.

For the 10th annual Fling, event organizers raised more than $40,000 for Safehouse. Last year the Guild raised $92,000 and donated $84,000 to Safehouse.

Today, the Fling is clearly one of Boulder’s premiere fund-raisers. It also has greatly increased awareness of domestic abuse and the important role the Safehouse fills to work with battered women.
