Greeley Auto Group sold to Kansas buyer

GREELEY – The beleaguered Greeley Auto Group has been sold for a second time within a year.

An April 28 sale left the Honda, Mazda, Isuzu and Volkswagen dealership at 3805 W. 10th Ave. in the hands of Dennis Davis of Wichita, Kan.

“It will change the way business is done here,” Davis said.

One observer said the previous owner simply was not generating any business.

Indeed, Bill Slaughter of Atlanta owned Greeley Auto Group for only 10 months, and within that time decided to sell the business.

“I definitely did not buy the business based on what they were doing,” Davis said.

Prior to Slaughter’s ownership, the car lot was known as Key Auto Plaza.

Davis comes from Davis-Moore Auto Group, the largest automotive group in Kansas. The group has operations in New Mexico, Texas and Georgia as well as business interests in Oklahoma and Nebraska. This is its first location in Colorado and Davis’ first venture on his own, although the Davis-Moore Auto Group is a partner in the deal.

Approximately 30 people now work at the dealership. As Dennis Davis Auto Group, the new company soon will hire another 15 to 20 employees. Additionally, the number of new and used cars available at the lot will double within the next few weeks.

And Davis already has plans to purchase six acres of land at 47th Avenue and the U.S. Highway 34 bypass. The entire business eventually will be relocated there, and two new showrooms will be constructed.

“I’ve agreed to be out of here (the 10th Avenue location) by December of 1998,” he said. “I’m going to try and do it sooner than that.”

Another dealership move in Greeley could come from Garnsey & Wheeler Ford. Owners of the 75-year-old icon of car sales are considering moving the business.

“We’ve been outgrowing this space for the past few years,´ said Tim Brynteson, general manager of the dealership.

He emphasized, however, that the business still is in the “really, really early stages” of considering a relocation.

“We are in the process of negotiations and considering various sites,” Brynteson said. “It definitely would be something bigger.”

He said it’s still unclear whether the current location at 1100 Eighth Ave. would remain open after a new site is found.
