Sierra plans expansion in Cheyenne

CHEYENNE – One of Cheyenne’s fastest-growing companies is preparing to expand again.Sierra Trading Post, which operates a retail outdoor wear and equipment outlet store and a mail-order catalog business from the Cheyenne Business Parkway, has purchased another parcel of land adjacent to its facility and plans expansions this year and next, company officials announced.
The nation’s first mail-order outdoor outlet store plans to add 6,000 square feet to its retail store this year, plus add 4,000 square feet to its mezzanine and additional parking, and it plans a 50,000-square-foot facility expansion in 1998.
“The store has done so well that we have grown out of the space that we currently have, and with the additional 6,000 square feet we feel we will better serve our customers,´ said Bobbi Richardson, vice president and retail store manager.
Her husband, Keith, is president of Sierra Trading Post, and together they have guided their company through growth averaging 40 percent a year over the past decade and have already overseen two major expansions at their Cheyenne facility, located just off Campstool Road along Interstate 80.
The company buys up excess inventory, overruns or closeouts of name-brand outdoor apparel and equipment at low prices and then offers them to customers at discounts of 40 percent to 70 percent.
Sierra Trading Post was founded in 1986 in Reno, Nev., with just two employees. It moved to Cheyenne in 1986 and built a 30,000-square-foot “fulfillment center” on seven acres in the Cheyenne Business Parkway, a 914-acre business and industrial park owned by Cheyenne LEADS, Cheyenne and Laramie County’s economic-development corporation.
Since moving to Cheyenne, Sierra Trading Post has grown from 60 employees to 200, and its customer base has grown from 200,000 to 750,000.
