Study: Pro Challenge had $130M economic impact on state

The 2014 USA Pro Challenge bicycle race in August had a $130 million economic impact on Colorado, according to a study conducted by Sponsorship Science LLC, a global sports research firm.

The race took place from Aug. 18 to 24 through 10 cities including Aspen, Crested Butte, Gunnison, Monarch Mountain, Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Breckenridge, Vail, Boulder and Denver.

The economic impact on each city was not included in the study’s findings.

The race had 128 professional cyclists from all over the world and drew spectators traveling to Colorado, resulting in roughly $130 million being spent on lodging, food, transportation and entertainment.

According to the study, 56 percent of spectators claimed they would not have traveled to the state at this time if it were not for the race, and 70.9 percent stated that they are likely to return to watch the race next year.

“This race showcases Colorado to the world and creates an incredible economic impact locally that can be felt throughout the year,” said Rick Schaden, owner of the race, in a prepared statement.
