Stein-Mart to close in Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS-Stein Mart Inc. (NASDAQ: SMRT) plans to close its Fort Collins store at 2211 S. College Ave #300 by late summer. The retailer is closing 16 “underperforming” stores nationwide, which includes the Fort Collins store and two other stores in Colorado, in Westminster and Littleton.

Stein Mart sells clothing for men, women and children, accessories and home décor items.

“It is unfortunate we had to do this, but these stores were underperforming and not profitable,´ said Susan Datz Edelman, Stein Mart’s director of stockholder relations.

“We expect the store to close by fall.”

The Fort Collins store employs about full- and part-time people who have been given the opportunity to continue with Stein Mart in other locations.

The retailer plans to open 14 new stores by the end of 2003 and looks at the closure of the selected stores as a way to improve company revenues.

“We believe this will make Stein Mart a stronger company in the long-run,” Edelman said.
