Fire promps cancellation of Community Classic Bike Tour

The McKee Medical Center Foundation announced Friday it is cancelling Sunday’s 25th Annual Community Classic Bike Tour because of health concerns raised by the Hewlett Fire.

Heavy smoke has blanked much of the bike route over the past few days. Pollutants from wildfire smoke can be dangerous to people’s health.

“It is difficult to predict air quality for the weekend, but given the size of the fire, the limited containment, and the unpredictability of fire behavior, the McKee Medical Center Foundation believes it is in the best health interests of the participants, volunteers and staff members to cancel this year’s event,” the foundation said in a statement.

Proceeds raised from the event were intended to support a new facility for the Stepping Stones Adult Day Program. The financial need remains, but refunds will be provided to any registered participant who requests one.
The CCBT is a non-competitive, multi-distance bicycle tour that travels through the  foothills of Larimer County in Loveland and Fort Collins. It includes four routes: 62-mile, 37-mile, 30-mile, or 10-mile.
This is the first time the CCBT has been cancelled.

“This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the right decision,” said Dawn Paepke, events coordinator for the McKee Medical Center Foundation. “We appreciate the community’s support for the Community Classic Bike Tour and we look forward to bringing it back next year.”
