California restaurant mogul buys Super 8 motel in Longmont

LONGMONT — The chief executive and founder of a California restaurant franchisee company paid $4.7 million recently to buy the Super 8 hotel at 2446 N. Main St. in Longmont.

Aurora based Choi’s Hospitality sold the 64-room hotel to SFL LLC, an entity formed by WKS Restaurant Group CEO Roland Spongberg and a business partner.

Spongberg, who also owns a Quality Inn by Choice hotel in Ogallala, Neb., said his plan is to continue operating the Longmont hotel, with plans to renovate all of the guest rooms.

He said he liked the property for its location along one of the gateways to Rocky Mountain National Park, and said the hotel operates at an average of 80 percent occupancy.

Spongberg’s WKS, based in Lakewood, Calif., owns 110 Denny’s, El Pollo Loco, Krispy Kreme and Corner Bakery Café restaurants throughout the West, although none is in Colorado. He said he has no other plans at this time to buy other hotels in the state.

“We’re going to operate this one and reposition a little with the remodel and see how we do,” Spongberg said.
