Colorado now eighth in mega-wind-watts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – New wind projects completed during the second quarter of 2009 have the ability to generate enough new electricity to power 350,000 U.S. homes, according to the quarterly report from the American Wind Energy Association.

During the second quarter, new wind energy capacity of more than 1,200 megawatts was installed. The total installed capacity in the United States is now more than 29,400 megawatts with approximately 5,000 megawatts under construction and slated for completion within the next year.

According to the report, Colorado ranked eighth in the nation with 1,068 megawatts installed, but the state has not seen any additional capacity come on line since 2008. Vestas, which manufactures its wind turbine blades in Windsor, completed two projects in the second quarter — one each in Texas and Oregon. It completed four projects during the first quarter and has seven currently under construction.
