Region’s retail sales, taxes drop in April

DENVER – Retail sales and the taxes collected on them in Larimer and Weld counties dropped significantly in April compared to last year, according to figures released by the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Larimer County’s retail sales of $61.5 million represented a decline of 7.8 percent from April 2008’s total of $66.7 million. The $1.3 million in taxes collected on those sales declined 7.1 percent from last year’s $1.4 million.

Weld County’s April sales of $29.4 million were a 14.5 percent drop from last year’s $34.4 million, but the $604,000 in taxes collected declined by only 6 percent from the $642,000 collected in April 2008.

The percentage of retail sales from food and beverage services remained steady in Larimer County at 56 percent year over year, while increasing in Weld County from 56 percent in April 2008 to 60 percent this year. Sales taxes in that category dropped 4 percent in Larimer County but less than 1 percent in Weld County.
