Matusik sheds interim title to become dean at CU business school

BOULDER — Sharon F. Matusik has been appointed dean of the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder after serving as the interim dean there since January.

Matusik replaced economist William Kaempfer, senior vice provost and associate vice chancellor for budget and planning, who served as interim dean of the business school for two months. Kaempher had replaced David Ikenberry who resigned in August following accusations about Ikenberry’s treatment of women in the school and a report by the Daily Camera that he’d faced three gender-discrimination lawsuits in recent years.

Formerly the academic director of the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, Matusik continues to teach classes on strategy and entrepreneurship, and counsels startups along the Front Range. Matusik worked in the consulting field for seven years before joining Leeds in 2004.

Gordon Trafton, chairman of the Leeds Board of Alumni and Friends, said he believes the appointment of Matusik represents “a turning point” for Leeds.

“Whether the conversation is faculty research, student demographics and engagement, rankings or advancement, it is clear that Sharon will champion efforts to ensure Leeds remains a national and international leader,” Trafton said in a prepared statement.

Matusik is spearheading an expansion of the Koelbel Building in partnership with the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. A 30,000-square-foot addition to the Koelbel Building will be used by the Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The project, initially slated for completion in early 2020, would include a 10,000-square-foot renovation of existing space, including a portion of the William M. White Business Library.

The initial estimated project cost is $22 million, being raised by the Leeds School through donations, along with support from the College of Engineering and Applied Science to help fund construction of a new auditorium.
