Local impact of Level 3’s job cuts unclear
The Broomfield-based telecommunications company (NYSE: LVLT) has cut “a very small percent of jobs” recently as it integrates Global Crossing into the company. Level 3 acquired Global Crossing in 2011 for $3 billion.
According to a press statement from a Level 3 spokesperson, the cuts mostly eliminated “redundant and duplicative positions.” The company is adding to its sales force.

Level 3 is Broomfield’s largest employer, with 2,068 employees, according to the Broomfield Economic Development Corp. After the merger, Level 3 had a total of approximately 10,900 employees worldwide, according to the report prepared for its last annual investor meeting.
State officials have not been notified of mass layoffs as would be required by the WARN Act, Colorado Department of Labor and Employment spokesman Bill Thoennes said. Level 3 is a large enough company that it could lay off many employees without having to file notice, but it is not clear if that is the case in this situation, Thoennes said.
The statement from Level 3 read:
“As a result of our acquisition of Global Crossing, we made a very limited reduction last month, mostly consisting of redundant and duplicative positions and only affecting a very small percentage – in the low single digits – of our global workforce. Our priority continues to be to deliver a superior customer experience, which is why any workforce actions are considered very carefully. At the same time, we are actively recruiting high-performing, quota-bearing sales people in all regions to drive revenue growth and to deliver that positive customer experience.”
