Homebuilders keep hot pace in Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN – Housing construction permits may be lagging throughout Northern Colorado, but not in Johnstown.

The southwest Weld County town is on pace to set a record for permits for single-family residences, surpassing the 2002 record total of 263 permits.

Through August, Johnstown officials had issued 198 permits. As of today, builders have pulled another 19 permits in September, said David Korth, Johnstown’s chief building official. An additional 28 permit applications are waiting for review, Korth said.

“I’m surprised we’re doing what we’re doing, considering what I’ve heard from surrounding jurisdictions,” Korth said.

Across Northern Colorado, housing permits for single-family homes are well behind the pace of recent years. According to the Home Builders Association of Northern Colorado, single-family starts through July had totaled 3,053, down 8.6 percent from the same point in 2002.

In Fort Collins, single-family permits numbered 723 through August, down 20.5 percent.
