Unemployment rates drop in Northern Colorado, Boulder Valley

The unemployment rate dropped considerably in the region from March to April, with all metro areas in Northern Colorado and the Boulder Valley seeing a drop of 1 percentage point or close to it.

The unemployment rate in Greeley dropped from 6.5 percent to 5.5 percent from March to April, and in Fort Collins from 5.4 percent to 4.4 percent.

Broomfield also saw a full 1 percent drop, from 6 percent to 5 percent, but Boulder had the lowest unemployment rate in the region, with just 4.2 percent unemployment in April, down from 5.1 percent in March.

All four metro areas saw decreases in unemployment year-over-year in April as well, with Greeley experiencing the largest drop, down by 1.6 percentage points from 7.1 percent in April 2013.

Statewide, the unemployment rate decreased by two-tenths of a percentage point to 6 percent in April, according to the latest data from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

The last time the Colorado unemployment rate was 6 percent or lower was in November 2008 when the rate was 5.7 percent.

The number of people participating in the labor force increased by 8,900 over the month and the number of people reporting themselves as employed increased by 14,400.

The national unemployment rate in April was 6.3 percent, down from 7.5 percent in April 2013.
