A Dream Vocation

The other day I asked a candidate, “What energizes you?” Without hesitation he said, “Golf!” I was a bit taken aback. I was looking for an answer that had to do with the position for which he was applying. Or at least something work related. Instead I heard a lot about golf.

Granted, I could have asked a more direct question such as, “What energizes you at work?” But in my mind, the candidate was being given a chance to share his passion about sales not what he likes to do in his free time.

The phone bill won’t wait to be paid while we search for that illusive dream job. Dream Jobs are hard to come by. But what if our lives were more holistically aligned?  What if our vocations were not so drastically different from our vacations? I would suggest that this is simply a little mental typo that prevents many of us from living and working happily.

Perhaps this particular candidate couldn’t make a living as a pro golfer. But he could work in sales at a country club! Or, maybe he could land a gig as a regional sales account manager for a golf apparel line?

Job searchers might be surprised to find that working in an industry that excites and energizes them is not as impossible as it seems. Think about what you love to do and go do that. Your passion can open doors and take you places you never thought possible. Unlike dream vacations that last a couple of weeks and are over, dream vocations offer years of satisfaction.
